A day late on this one. I didn’t want to skip it since this set will be leaving my den soon and it couldn’t leave without me writing about it. Not that it is a bad scent, quite the contrary, it is quite nice. However I do need to rotate a few things out to pay for a razor I have coming in and given the scent profile on this, it isn’t one that will excite me into regular use.
What is the scent you ask? Well Morning Hike isn’t the walk through the forest coniferous scent I was kind of expecting given the description. Rather this is a fresh scent with a somewhat bright and fruity opening. Scent notes on this are sage, grapefruit, orange, lavender, oak moss, tonka, and amber. I was surprised at how much the Orange and Grapefruit popped. It is a fantastic opening. The lavender and oak moss is quite subtle, not taking you too far into fougere territory like you might expect. It is then grounded in the masculine tonka and amber. It is a really well done and unique scent. I’d say scent strength is medium off the puck but I’m also a bit scent blind to citrus scents, it is possible people will interpret that to be stronger.
I took my That Darn Rob for it’s first spin during this shave. I know it may be sacrilege to some but I set a 26mm synthetic in this handle. I tend to reach for synthetics a bit more for ease of use and this brown ‘faux horse’ style is one of my favourites. Soft and dense with just the right amount of backbone. The handle looks gorgeous (I’m a sucker for natural wood handles) and is very comfortable. My one knock on it is the stink. This isn’t my first experience with the funky smell in a natural wood handle. I think it is something in how the wood is finished that causes the stink when wet. I hope it goes away because it certainly takes away from the shave. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
I finished up with the matching post shave. This offering is an alcohol/witch hazel based splash with a bit of skin food in it. It is a good mix of both for those that like that little bit of a burn and still have all the skin food properties to go along with it. Scent strength was again a medium with the same caveat about me being scent blind.
A great shave and whomever ends up with this set is going to be very happy with it.
