#samplesaturday A little late on this one. I did the photo and shave right before we packed up for our Christmas travels…. and once I arrived I was hit hard by not only the cold I had coming but a nasty case of the stomach flu. Just starting to feel like myself now.
The shave itself was alright. I grabbed this PAA Cavendish sample. The scent instantly reminds me of my Grandpa. I don’t remember much of old Frank, but I do remember the scent of his pipe tobacco. This has the sweet notes of vanilla and cherry. I absolutely love it, and will be adding this to my den.
The soap itself is in the OG PAA formula before they switched everything over to the Crown King formulation. It is a very soft soap, loads and lathers easily but I didn’t much care for the performance. I found it a bit drying (I kept adding water and couldn’t get the hydration to the point I really liked) and didn’t find the slickness the greatest. The CK formulas are a big improvement in my opinion. It did the job, but I’m glad I’ll be able to pick up this scent in the new formula.
For the hardware, I opted for a vintage razor and brush that my grandpa might use. This old Gem razor is a real beauty. I really need to get it re-plated as the detail on it is amazing. It shaves OK, not as smooth as my Ever-Ready 1912, but still quite nice. The restored Rubberset with cashmere knot is such a fantastic brush, I love this knot.
All in all, not a bad shave, making me think of Old Grandpa Frank. I’m sure he is ice fishing somewhere on that big icy pond in the sky.
